This is part 1 of our little Euro Rail adventure across some of Europe's finest Cities! We had our first stop in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia and king of hipster cafes!
Not a city we had heard much about or expected a huge from turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Packed with trendy bars and restaurants with a small city vibe this place was easy to navigate and explore by foot.
On our first day we checked out the old town, stopping by some super hipster coffee shops on the way. Buzzing from too much caffeine we headed up the hill to Bratislava Castle to get a bird's-eye view of the city.
Parched from the hike and in need of some hydration we set off for Urban House - beer o'clock? (highly recommend a visit if you're an Italian pizza lover).
Since our hotel had a microbrewery and beer garden we panned off the afternoon sightseeing to sample some of their delicious beer, at least we saw the castle!
Walking back into the old town for dinner we got side tracked by some super fancy cocktails at Fach (eating's cheating right?) before losing track of time and having a late night panic dinner at a Mexican and El Diablo bar (we weren't impressed).
The next day with a mild hangover we managed to get ourselves out the hotel before 10am (go us) and over to the bus station under the SNP bridge. From here the bus 28 made the short journey out to Devin Castle, where we then proceeded to miss our stop and ended up having to walk about a mile back on the main road. The castle costs just €5 to enter where you get some awesome views of the surrounding area and the opportunity to explore the castle ruins. Finding out later that the bus 29 actually stops in the car park we took this back to the centre of Bratislava (20 min ride for €1).
Is it time for a beer yet? Down at the river The Riva Bistro & Bar serves up some very cheap drinks (€1.50 beer) on their river boat with some cracking views of the UFO bridge. Some live music kicks off later in the night so if you stick around you can expect some entertainment while you get legless.
We couldn't leave Bratislava without trying out the burgers at Fabrikas and I'm glad we did, with in-house made beer and some delicious bar food I can't recommend this place enough for any visit to this city.
Next morning, we bought some train tickets to Vienna for €12.50 each and settled into the 1 hour sauna of a train ride (no a/c, cry). You can also get the boat up the river to Vienna if you prefer! it takes about 2 hours and costs around €20.
